Wisdom Tooth Extraction - Orlando, FLOne of Florida Oral Surgery’s services is wisdom tooth extraction, servicing patients from the Orlando, FL area.

Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars.  Most people’s jaws are too small for wisdom teeth to come in properly so when they do they often cause problems including pain, infection, gum disease and crowding of nearby teeth.  It is often recommended that you remove the wisdom teeth as early as possible to prevent any complications or oral health problems in the future. Your dentist could extract the teeth for you or refer you to a surgical orthodontist. The actual extraction surgery can last anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The position of the way the wisdom tooth has grown in will determine the length of the surgery and procedure that will need to be conducted to remove it. In preparation for the surgery make sure you schedule a few days off of school or work for recovery time. Also make sure that you wear comfortable, loose clothing and make arrangements for someone to drive you to and from the appointment.

After the surgery bite down on some gauze and use constant pressure to help the bleeding stop. You can also hold an ice pack against the cheek for 10 minutes at a time with a 5 minute resting period in between to help reduce the swelling. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids but avoid drinks that are hot since the heat can increase swelling and bleeding. In order to help the healing processes eat soft foods until you feel you are able to start integrating solid foods into your diet again. Also for the next few days brush and floss your teeth gently and over the next week, after each meal rinse your mouth out and use an antiseptic or a mixture of warm water and ½ teaspoon of salt. If the pain after the surgery is severe, bleeding is hard to control, you experience fever or chills, you have persistent nausea or vomiting or you experience itching and swelling contact your doctor as soon as possible.
